Kenya now offers a dedicated route for remote workers. The Digital Nomad Pass allows a foreign national whose income is earned abroad to live in Kenya while working remotely for an employer, clients or a business based outside the country. It answers a question the older permit categories were never designed for: what authorisation fits a person whose work travels with them?
Who is the Digital Nomad Pass for?
The pass is aimed at people who work remotely , employees of foreign companies, freelancers and business owners , whose income is sourced from outside Kenya and whose work does not depend on the Kenyan labour market. The distinction matters in practice. A remote worker serving Kenyan clients, or taking up employment with a Kenyan employer, is ordinarily looking at a work permit under the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act 2011 instead, and the two routes should not be conflated when applying.
What does a considered application include?
- evidence of employment or engagement outside Kenya , contracts, a letter from the foreign employer, or documented client arrangements;
- proof that income is earned abroad and meets the financial threshold the authorities prescribe;
- a valid passport and clear identity documents;
- the security and health clearances the authorities require;
- accommodation arrangements and a credible intention to reside without entering local employment.
How does the pass differ from a work permit?
A work permit responds to a Kenyan sponsor’s need for particular skills; the Digital Nomad Pass responds to a labour market that no longer requires an office. Because the holder is not intended to take local employment, the application turns on the genuineness of the foreign income and the applicant’s circumstances rather than on a Kenyan employer’s support. Holders should also consider tax residence , sustained time in Kenya can raise questions that are better answered before arrival than after.
